Vermont Web Design on Squarespace

About

Designing websites, riding bikes, and playing tunes on WRUV in no particular order.

A little about me and my process…

My name is Dan Kirk (he/him) and I ride bikes mostly on dirt (and also on snow), ski on snow, and play tunes on the radio once a week.  I live in Burlington, VT and have an overwhelming affinity for the Pacific Northwest.  I take pictures with my phone, my brother owns a farm, and for many amazing years owned a legendary dog named Wyatt.

My surroundings inform my aesthetic.  Living in Burlington and Vermont at large, I get to experience a vibrant and historical music, design, and hand-crafted artisan scene with access to the spacious calm and natural landscape just a few minutes down the way.

The intersection of these environments is where my design approach lives: clean, efficient, and natural.

How it works.

To arrive at your optimal website style x function destination, we’ll typically have a short phone call to check-in and talk a bit about what they’re needing for their site. I also have a list of questions I have refined over the years to hone in on exactly what we want the website to do. Once we have this level of communication and understanding established, we decide on which end of the website tiers I offer–or where in between–we want to work and go from there.

Note that all clients are responsible for Squarespace’s hosting costs and Google Workspace subscription; for each I can hook you up with a 20% discount on the first year!

My hourly rate is $82.50 per hour for projects not requiring a full website build.

In an effort to create a society and economy that supports, amplifies, and empowers BIPOC members of our community, 44 Degrees North extends a 25% discount on all services to BIPOC clients.

All nonprofit clients receive a 10% discount on all services, websites, and hourly work. Google Workspace also offers free email for nonprofit clients!

Questions about discounts? Please get in touch.

I am happy to work with any client at any budget! Payment plans are available as well.

How we’ll collaborate.

My approach to this work is that just because we can do something, it doesn't necessarily mean we should. Oftentimes, designers add features, widgets, apps, plugins, whatever that require regular maintenance or just end up breaking. This can be frustrating when a business or organization wants to manage small fixes and edit their own websites. Ultimately, it seems to waste everyone's time and money.  So, I design on Squarespace: it works, it looks great, it's managed from top to bottom (avoiding widget/plugin concern, above) it has very streamlined and contemporary features (e.g. video banners and cover pages, contact forms, email marketing, e-commerce, blogging, events feeds/calendars/pages, social media integration) incorporated within the platform–not by third parties–and it is easy to 'hand over the keys' to the website owner when the design is complete.

What we’ll create.

Style + Function + Ease

Each Squarespace site is responsive (mobile-ready) and equipped with strong SEO strategy elements; site descriptions, page titles, custom URLs, search-friendly formatting, and other key elements are all easily managed. Beyond this, Squarespace automatically generates a built-in sitemap that helps Google to crawl, understand, and rank a website. Read more about understanding and execution of SEO here.

Squarespace will also keep your site safe from hackers, allow you to easily edit text, images, blogs, and social media, provide automatic software updates, and enable you to sell online without the hassle of getting a security certificate, which is included on every Squarespace website.

Inclusive design is paramount to websites that are accessible by all users; I employ various applications and practices in the designing and building processes of a site to optimize its ADA compliance, usability, and accessibility for all users.

In order to create a site that is unique to your aesthetic, user experience, and goals, I'm experienced in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a few other languages.
